Cushion Covers 101

Hello to all my interior design lovers and home decor enthusiasts. Welcome to our very first blog post.

One of the quickest, easiest and least expensive ways to freshen up your room and give it that oh so needed new look is to change out your cushion covers, aka pillow covers.  Yes! Cushion covers are so versatile and can change the look and feel of any space in a matter of minutes. There are so many different colors, patterns and textures to choose from. Why not give them all a try (but not all at once😊).  

When to change your cushion covers?

1. Change them with the seasons.  Two of my favorite seasons to make changes are spring and winter. In the springtime try light colors like yellows and oranges or even pastels. Fun floral patterns also help to bring the outdoors in, so to speak. The winter is the time to use rich, darker hues like forest green or burgundy and heavier fabrics like velvet and chenille.

2. Change them during the holidays. A room beautifully decorated for the holiday is one of those things that just gets you in a festive mood. Decorating your space in the colors of the flag for Independence Day or orange and black for Halloween or your carefully chosen color scheme for Christmas does so much to bring the holiday alive in your home.

3. Change them for events. A quick change of your cushion covers will help set the vibe for themed parties, girls night in, valentines celebrations or any other special occasion.

4. Change them for the fun of it. Sometimes you just want a different look. You just want to spruce things up a bit. Hey, that's reason enough...change those covers and give that room an instant, easy inexpensive makeover.

How to choose the right cushion covers?

Size is definitely important. So before you start shopping, bring out the measuring tape. Measure the length and width of your existing cushions from end to end. Designer Tip: If you want a fuller, fluffier look and feel to your cushions, use a smaller cushion cover. Let’s say that your cushions are 20 x 20. You want to purchase 18 x 18 cushion covers. Gently stuff the cushion into the smaller cushion cover making sure that the ends of the cushion are aligned with the ends of the cushion cover and voila...you now have a beautifully plump looking cushion instead of a sad, droopy looking cushion. Try it. You’ll thank me later😊

Now that the technical stuff is out of the way, on to the fun part...shopping. As you look for your new cushion covers, consider the theme or vibe that you are trying to achieve. Look for cushion covers that embody your vision for the space. Keep in mind that color, textures and patterns all play a part in the design aesthetic of your space.

Where to use your cushions?

It’s all up to you. Use your cushions in the sofa/couch, Love seat, armchairs, dining room chairs, bench seating, bed, outdoor seating, office chair or even in the car for additional support.
